COPENHAGEN COFFEE
I’m a big fan of Copenhagens vibrant coffee scene. I love to visit new exciting places and love to come back again and again to old favourites.
So I decided to share my opinion and create a little overview of the best coffee stops – divided by neighbourhoods.
AMAGER
CUB COFFEE
This two branch coffee shop has their own roastery on these premises where they also run this nicely laid out space serving coffee, breakfast and light meals.
No 95
On Amagerbrogade 95 – hence the name – this small coffee shop will make you a quality cup of coffee. They have both some nice windowseats and a bench outside making it the perfect spot for a few minutes of people watching.
KAFFEBAREN PÅ AMAGER
Tucked a little bit away from the main street this cosy little café satisfies your coffee needs. Having a seating area outside it makes for a nice quiet coffee break in the sun – if the weather allows it.
RICCOS
Riccos is a “independent chain café” (If such a thing exists?) with several branches spread throughout the city. But all with their own unique indie feel. The thing they all have in common though is the quality you’ll find in every cup.
WULF & KONSTALI
This place is half bakery half café. They are well acclaimed for their delicious brunch plates but be sure to treat yourself with one of their lemon rolls – and have a coffee on the side. You will not regret it.
CHRISTIANSHAVN
CAFÉ BÅDKLUBBEN
This hidden gem in what seems to be an old boat workshop of some kind welcomes you with a log on the fire on cold days. Coffee as well as breakfast is great here. Be sure to check out their opening hours online before going – they can be a little tricky.
THE CORNER AT 108
This Michelin star restaurant by night run a coffee shop in the mornings and throughout the day. Beans being served are from Norwegian Tim Wendelboe. At 108 they do some must-try pasteries (could it be that the Michelin chefs in the kitchen are sharing their skills?). The salty cinnamon bun is an absolute favourite.
SWEET TREAT
On a cobbled stone street this little cosy café treat guests with cakes, salads and sandwiches. And of course well crafted cups of coffee.
PARTERRE CHRISTIANSHAVN
By the canal in a basement this café is located only a stones throw from the freetown of Christiania. Serving simplistic delicious lunch plates, croissants and great coffee this is a must.visit when in Christianshavn.
COPENHAGEN CITY
SONNY
Home cooked everything. This place creates their dishes from scratch using seasonal produce for both breakfast, lunch and cakes. At the time of writing this coffee at Sonny is being brewed from local Danish La Cabra roastery.
YES CPH
Right behind the back of the Marble Church Yes is located. Great coffee and open rye bread sandwiches (you will not regret trying the one with goat cheese) are just some of the treats being handed over the counter here.
LILLE PETRA
Danish furniture and home interior company &Tradition runs a tucked away showroom on the edge of Kongens Have – a popular Copenhagen Park – including a café area serving coffee and small treats. The space is of course furnished with their own furniture and lamps which makes it well curated and beautiful. They also have a courtyard for those warmer summer days.
DET VIDE HUS
The Wide House is what Det Vide Hus translates into. And even though that’s what it is called it is actually a quite narrow house. The café itself is quite small as well but they have additional seating upstairs making room for more guests than you’d thought there would be room for inside. Coffee here is great and the juices they create here are great as well.
COFFEE COLLECTIVE BERNIKOW
One out of four Coffee Collective cafés is located in the city center. Behind the red door you’ll find great interior as well as court yard seats under a glass roof. The Coffee Collective roast their own beans – a new batch every day. If you’re into lightly roasts this is probably the place for you to go
DEMOCRATIC COFFEE
In busy Krystalgade right next to Rundetårn and the City Library of Copenhagen you’ll find Democratic Coffee. Allegedly the owner of this place didn’t know how to bake croissants when he first opened up so he used YouTube to learn how and has since perfected the crustiness to actually be called out as the best croissant in Copenhagen.
CUB COFFEE
In the old part of town almost at the foot of the Danish Parliament go down some steep steps and you will be lead to this café in the basement. Cosy corners combined with great coffees makes this a city center favorite.
RAPHA COPENHAGEN
Cyclists paradise with a café alongside bikes and spandex wear may sound like an odd combo BUT it really works! Especially because the coffee here is actually very good. So hop off your bike and recharge yourself here.
ATELIER SEPTEMBER
Cool vintage interior combined with great food and good coffee. What else do you need? Instagramable breakfast dishes or maybe an avocado on rye (also fitted for Instagram) enjoyed at one of the window seats overlooking the bustle of Gothersgade you could spend hours just hanging out here.
NORDHAVN
DEPANNEUR
The old industrial harbor area Nordhavn is being transformed into a residential area these years. But offices are also becoming a part of this urban seaside neighborhood. Like the renowned Cobe Architects whose rebuilt warehouse building houses the café Depanneur. Open to everyone it’s an inspiring place to visit feeling the vibe of creative minds laying plans for the future of the city while enjoying a coffee.
THE AUDO
A very stylish hotel lobby/shop/café/common area greets you when entering the Audo. A creative space for working and living. You can just pop in for a coffee or you can book a room and stay for as long as you like.
ORIGINAL COFFEE
This chain of cafés serves Kontra Coffee beans. Only a few meters from the edge of the pier in the winter months you can enjoy your nice hot coffee while observing winter swimmers taking a dip in the cold salty water.
NØRREBRO
FOVL
On the outer edge of Nørrebro you’ll find Fovl. A no-nonsense café serving no-nonsense breakfast. Simple and delicious and just what you need to satisfy your morning hunger. Plus the coffee served is spot on.
ARREBO
Placed on a corner with large striped awnings hanging from the façade Arrebo has plenty of room for outside seating. Inside in the nicely laid out café there is room for seating as well of course. Different patterned tiles and matching colors together with fleamarket finds creates a homey vibe that makes you want to stay and have an extra coffee.
MINAS KAFFEBAR
This conceptually strong place aims at a quality focused audience. An audience that maybe sometimes wonder why good coffee need to be THAT pricy. Fixed 15 Danish kroner prices makes the price level around half of what you’ll typically pay for coffee in Copenhagen. The all bright yellow colored interior gives Minas a welcoming atmosphere.
ANDERSEN & MAILLARD
The pastry served here is in a league of it’s own. What about an espresso glased croissant on the side of your flat white? They also make an awesome sourdough bread so if you like baked stuff and coffee this is a must-visit when in Copenhagen.
MIRABELLE
Quality bread, buns and other stuff straight from the oven plays the main role at Mirabelle. That being said the coffee here is also great. So if you should find yourself being a little hungry – or just in the mood for a small piece of cake and a coffee this is definitely the place to check out.
DARCY’S KAFFE
This small basement joint will keep you engaged for hours if you are into international top quality magazines and art books. You can sit yourself down at one of the tables and enjoy your well brewed coffee and catch up on your favourite reads from off the shelf or you can simply buy them and bring them home. Darcy’s also carry a nice collection of nice art prints. This shop/coffee stop has something truly original.
TILDA
This place is run by a couple with three kids which means that their café has a family friendly approach. Also they are into organic locally produced and homemade food. With roots in Italy and Germany they introduce the Copenhageners to local favourites from their home countries. No need to mention that the coffee that go along with the dishes is great as well.
ØSTERBRO
Ø12
A fairly new addition to the coffee scene in Østerbro is Ø12. An unpretentious eatery at night and morning coffee pusher in the mornings they have hit something right. Their down to earth breakfast servings are tasteful and to the point as well are their lunches (need to go back for dinner some time). To my knowledge they are the only place in Copenhagen brewing their coffees on the superb Ozone beans from London.
JUNO
Believe the hype! A former Noma chef is the guy behind this bakery – appointed the best in Copenhagen by several feinschmeckers around the web. And the rumors are all true! The things coming out of the oven here are in a league of their own. If you are satisfied with “just” a filter coffee – it’s what they serve here – then this I certainly where you should make a pit stop.
AT THE COUNTER
This place is run by the people behind Juno the Bakery. They wanted a place focusing on the coffee aspect of things so in order to keep baked goods and coffee separated the opened At The Counter just around the corner from the bakery. This does not – however – mean that you can’t fulfill your urge for delicious freshly baked stuff. They do serve a small assortment from the sister shop next door.
JACKS HOLE IN THE WALL
Here you can both enter the café via the impressive courtyard or you can just stop by the window and by your coffee from there – perfect for a sunny day walk in Kongens Have (one of the old traditional parks in Copenhagen) which has one of it’s entrances right across the street from Jacks Hole In The Wall.
VESTERBRO
PROLOG
Home to double Danish Barista Champion Jonas Gehl, Prolog serves what have several times been called out to be one of the best cups of coffee in Copenhagen. Roasting their own beans and even connecting with the farmers growing them you will be sure to get yourself a 360 experience in a cup here.
RICCOS
Now having 13 branches around town (and even one in Copenhagen Airport that you should visit for coffee when there) the original first Riccos is still where it first opened up back in 2001 being first mover-ish on the third wave coffee scene in Copenhagen.
ENGHAVE KAFFE
This cave-like garage themed coffee pit stop with an old speedway motorcycle as decoration on the wall has a relaxed atmosphere. They emphasise the chilled vibe to such a degree that they actually have a laptop ban. Guess they want their guests to cop out and relly enjoy a coffee and a real conversation.
RISTERIET
In the basement on Halmtorvet they serve well brewed hot liquid. Their breakfast plate with Vesterhavsost (cheese from the Danish Westcoast) on a bun and marmalade makes the perfect start on your day.
CENTRAL HOTEL & CAFÉ
This tiny café resides below the one room only hotel called Central Hotel. The small size doesn’t apply to the quality of the coffee served here. And if the place is full you can buy your morning cup through the window.
PETROL
Another motorcycle-slash-garage-y café in Vesterbro. Located on this neighborhoods vibrant main street it’s an amazing place to sit and watch life go by outside. AND quality music is often played from the speakers especially if you like good old rock music with a 70s feel.
CAFÉ COCO
The interior here is totally Instagramable. As part of the newly opened and chic renovated Coco Hotel the café is open to everyone creating an international atmosphere with guests arriving and checking out via the reception faclilities in the bar.
